Teachable Moments

I love teachable moments.  I love them more when they are with my kids.  A couple of days ago Trena and I were having a parental conversation with our 8 year old daughter, explaining the expectations we have regarding behavior.  You parents know the drill...obedience, treat others as you want to be treated, etc.  It was a routine reminder of the Hamilton family values and expectations.

During this talk I was reminded of a catchy church mission statement that goes something like "head, heart, hands".  I quickly shifted gears and worked this into the conversation as a way to explain how following Jesus affects us.  First we know about Jesus...the Bible stories, the facts about his life, death and resurrection.  Once we know who Jesus is and what Jesus does we can love him.  When we love Jesus we choose to follow him.  Following Jesus means we behave a certain way...we obey our parents, treat others with love and respect and put people ahead of things.

The teachable moment passed, and I'm sure our daughter forgot dad's clever explanation within the hour.  I, however, have not been able to forget it.  Apparently my Heavenly Father was having a teachable moment with his son, Todd, because several times in the past few days I have stopped to consider if I am living a head, heart, hands kind of life.

My self assessment?  Lots of room to grow!

How about you?
