As a kid I saw much of the lower 48 states from the backseat of a Suburban as my family travelled from here to there on vacations each summer. I loved the excitement of the trip, the thrill of the unknown, and all the anticipation of going to a new place. Unfortunately, for a young boy that only lasted for about 10 minutes then I started asking the inevitable question, "are we there yet?"
To quiet the whiny voice from the backseat my parents educated me on the subject of mile markers. They would tell me where we were going and how many miles it would be. I learned to look forward to those mile markers alongside the highway. They were a way of knowing where we were in relationship to where we were going.
Today I am looking at some mile markers that bring an excitement reminiscent of that young boy on the road trip. I am filled with anticipation as I see Elevation Church moving along on our journey from birth to maturity. After four gatherings I am thrilled to share with you some of the mile markers we are already passing. We opened the doors of Elevation Church on a snowy Texas day with 12 people in attendance...9 adults and 3 children. At month's end we have ministered to 18 unique individuals including 4 children and 14 adults.
We accomplished our vision of helping people lead an elevated life through knowing, growing, and going in the following ways: Knowing Jesus was part of our One Anothers discussion based on the many 'one another' statements in the Bible. We accomplished the Growing in Relationships part of the vision by building relationships with one another both through worshipping together and through doing life together outside the church walls. We practiced Going Into the World sharing the love of Jesus by supplying 33 pounds of fresh venison to Beautiful Feet Ministries in Fort Worth which providede a hot, healthy meal for about 100 hungry, homeless people. Not bad for a 1 month old...but God is just getting us started.
I am enjoying reflecting back on these mile markers, but my eyes are already on what lies ahead. Just a week into our second month we have continued the trend of welcoming new people each time we gather. Our attendance continues to grow and the opportunities to minister continue to present themselves. This weekend I will elaborate on some upcoming mile markers to be looking for...you'll want to be here to hear about some of the opportunities God is opening up! I am also looking forward to discussing (and putting into practice) the biblical instruction to "bear one another's burdens" as we continue the "One Another" series.
I am excited about what God is doing on this amazing road trip called the Christian life! Our destination is out of this world and our e.t.a. is unknown, but the joy is in the journey so come on and let's be the church in Flower Mound and beyond!
Todd, I am enjoying reading your blog posts, and I am reminded of how well you write! Congratulations on following your heart and living your faith. All my best to you and your new church.
